ARCADIA, CA– On March 5, thousands of participants came out to enjoy the festivities at the 626 Golden Streets with Gabe the Sasquatch, the official spokesperson for 626 Golden Streets. The event was hosted by Metro Transportation and was spread throughout multiple cities, including Azusa, Irwindale, Duarte, Monrovia,  Arcadia, San Marino, and South Pasadena.

“To call the 626 a success would be an understatement. Even with the rain, the event attracted roughly 100,000 participants,” commented Damien Newton of the StreetsBlogLA.

Golden Streets was a free event, but participants were advised to bring a few dollars to purchase food, drinks, and rides on the Foothill Gold Line. Normal Metro fares applied on event day, which costs $1.75 one-way, $3.50 round-trip, or $7 for a day pass, plus $1 for a reusable TAP card, per person. Metro staff were present at Union Station and at each of the event stations to assist.

Participants were able to decide where they wanted to start and finish. Runners, walkers, and bikers were able to start in one city, end in another, and then head back to their original starting point by riding the Metro Gold Line. There wasn’t a wrong way to enjoy the event.

All forms of non-motorized transportation were permitted, including walking, biking, skating, jogging, ambling, and strolling.

Golden Streets was NOT a race, which means that there were no finisher medals or awards. Participants were encouraged to share the road and practice safety as one of their number one priorities.

The Gold Line Station Activity Hubs remained open until 4pm, despite the light rain that began to fall in the area around noon. The hubs allowed the participants to have time to relax, listen to live music, check out local businesses, and experience the SGV’s diverse offerings before heading home. It was also important for them to stop and take pictures of their time at the event. They would then share their best pictures on social media with the hash tag #626GoldenStreets for the chance to win Pure Fix bikes, 626 merchandise, and other gifts from the booths at the hubs.

The Arcadia Station Square Hub was presented by the Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority. Their main goal was to raise awareness about the Gold Line Foothill Extension and future plans, encourage local residents to walk, bike, skate and scoot to the new Gold Line stations, and allow local residents of all ages and abilities to experience the streets from a unique perspective.

Nhut-Linh Ngo, one of the attendees, commented, “I really enjoyed the vibe of the event, and all of the things offered. I even won two free tickets to go to the Santa Anita Race Track!”
