Braves Dominate the Moors

ALHAMBRA, CA– On Friday, March 3, the Baldwin Park High School Varsity Badminton team beat Alhambra in a preseason game on Moors’ territory with a score of 14-7. It was the Braves’ first game, but they hit the ground running with their astounding win.

“It was a great beginning to our season,” explained varsity member Tuyen Ho. “I also had a chance to learn more about playing mixed doubles.”

The varsity mixed doubles teams dominated on the courts against the Moors. Mixed 1 (Michelle Del Toro and Kevin Chua) and Mixed 2 (Sharon Tran and Jialou Chen) won their four games, and Mixed 3 (Tuyen Ho and Christopher Lazo) won its single game, earning the Braves five early wins.

Similarly, girls doubles also won all of their games. Girls’ Doubles 1 (Tiffany Yu and Shwe Nemyo) and Girls’ Doubles 2 (Del Toro and Cindy Nguyen) won four more matches to add to the Braves’ wins.

On the other hand, boys’ doubles missed a perfect sweep by one match. Boys’ Doubles 1 (Chua and Chen) won their two matches against Alhambra’s Boys’ Doubles 1 and 2, but Boys’ Doubles 2 (Bai Rong Lin and Alan Le) only won against Alhambra’s Boys’ Doubles 2. With these wins, three more points were added to the Braves’ score.

Girls’ Singles also met some difficulty in this preseason game. Girls’ Singles 1 (Ho) won both games against both of the Moors’ girls’ singles teams while Girls’ Singles 2 (Lena Do) unfortunately could not earn points for the Braves.

Boys’ Singles met no such luck since neither Boys’ Singles 1 (Lazo) nor Boys’ Singles 2 (Eugene Tran) won  their games. Both fought valiantly, especially since these were the first matches they ever played as varsity members, especially Tran, who is a freshman member on the varsity team.

“The choice for boys’ singles in badminton was completely out of the blue,” confessed E. Tran. “I was completely obliterated in boys’ singles. But the fact that having my coaches and teammates there made it much better.”

The junior varsity team also worked hard towards a win, but missed victory with a win of 7 matches against the 14 matches won by Alhambra. However, the JV team, along with the varsity team, promises to perform even better at the next and first official league game against Sierra Vista on Monday, March 6.
