BALDWIN PARK, CA — On Friday, January 13, Baldwin Park High School’s Girls’ Varsity Basketball team took on the Covina Colts in a game on Brave territory that resulted in a victory for the Colts with a score of 52-14.

“I feel like my performance and the team’s performance could’ve been way better,” stated Lady Brave Georgina Vazquez. “Also, we could’ve been more aggressive, we just weren’t ourselves but we got them next time we play.”

In the first quarter, Covina was off to a good start. They scored seven points before Baldwin Park had a chance to score two. Covina was very aggressive and fast on the court. They were also very skilled at shooting three pointers. The first quarter ended with the Colts in the lead, 15-6.

In the second quarter, the Braves attempted to catch up to the Colts. Such efforts were shown by Nicole Rodriguez, who made great rebounds going into this quarter. Unfortunately, the Braves did not block many of their opponent’s shots, which resulted in many points going to Covina. It also didn’t help that one of Baldwin Park’s players, Guadalupe Lopez, was injured during the game. The second quarter ended with a score of 29-11.

After halftime, the Braves seemed to regain their strength and definitely stepped up their offense with many aggressive plays. However, the Colts were the first to put points on the scoreboard for this half, 30-11. Despite their aggressive plays, the Braves could not catch up to the Colts, who were shooting accurate threes. The third quarter ended with a buzzer beater by the Colts, 43-11.

The Colts continued to relentlessly put points on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. The Braves seemed worn out at this point, but Karen Parra put an end to the Colts’ streak. The game ended with a score of 52-14 in the Colts’ victory.

“Covina messed up our defense and press, so I think we have to improve on adjusting on situations we haven’t been in, even if it takes more extra work,” admitted Lady Brave Jennifer Aguilar. “Today’s game wasn’t our best game, but we have learned from our mistakes to take them again in Round 2.”
