Take Back Trump

On November 13, President-Elect Donald Trump’s 60 Minutes interview aired. 60 Minutes was able to land the first exclusive interview with Trump after he was announced the president-elect for the Republican Party. Lesley Stahl interviewed Trump in his New York City residence regarding his election.

“I’ve done a lotta big things, I’ve never done anything like this. It is so big, it is so– it’s so enormous, it’s so amazing,” said Trump of his recent and shocking victory.

Trump’s campaign gained massive support after he mainly focused on immigration and the deportation of immigrants. Trump’s plans, as soon as he takes office, are to immediately deport two to three million undocumented immigrants. Policies like this, although empty promises, are what have garnered Trump the support of Americans who feel their government is not at its best.

The interview was notable for making it clear that Trump’s policies were not final but instead negotiable. After it aired, there were many angry Republicans who felt as though they were fooled by Trump and who were upset that he is not going to keep his word on the policies and laws he promised to pass if he were elected.

The interview showed Trump’s wavering and negotiable stances on the controversial ideas that drove his campaign in the first place. One of the most significant aspects of Trump’s campaign was the infamous wall he insists must be built to stop illegal immigration from Mexico. When Stahl brought up the rumor of a fence, Trump stated that he would allow fencing “for certain areas” where it is more appropriate.

He was also asked about his plans to deport millions of illegal immigrants and whether he was going to go through with it. President-Elect Trump stated that his administration would “get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers”, but that not all undocumented immigrants would be targeted. He went as far as referring to them as “terrific people”.

“We have so much work. There’s so much work to be done. And I want to get it done for the people. I want to get it done. We’re lowering taxes, we’re taking care of health care. I mean, there’s just so much to be done,” said Trump regarding the upcoming four years of his administration.
