Braves defeat Lobos to clinch league championship
November 3, 2015
BALDWIN PARK, CA — The Baldwin Park Braves obliterated the Workman Lobos at the Homecoming Game to clinch the Montview League Championship on Friday, October 30. The Braves have outscored their league opponents 158-27 in just four games.
The Homecoming Game was also the Braves’ Senior Night. The families of the seniors on the team were in attendance for their children’s last home football game.
After forcing the Lobos to punt, the Braves got on the board thanks to an explosive rush by junior Luis Flores with 7:48 remaining in the quarter. A successful one-point conversion attempt later and the Braves were up 7-0.
Just two minutes later, senior Nate Salcido made his way past the Lobos defense and into the end zone to widen the lead.
In the first play of the second quarter, sophomore Jacob Robles completed a pass to senior William Trinidad who then promptly scored a touchdown to bring the score to 21-0. Shortly thereafter, junior Luis Flores collected a 50-yd touchdown after a short pass by quarterback Jacob Robles.
Tensions rose as the Lobos offense rallied to within a few yards of the end zone until William Trinidad intercepted a pass that would have put the Lobos on the board if completed. Nate Salcido scored again on an 80-yd rush with 2:25 left in the half.
The third quarter featured another long-distance carry by junior Luis Flores. He finished the game with three touchdowns and will definitely be a much sought-after athlete this time next year.
Nate Salcido was phenomenal on both sides of the ball, collecting two touchdowns and sending a Lobos player to the sideline after a vicious tackle that epitomized the intensity with which the Braves’ defense performed that night.
The Workman Lobos finally got on the board with 10:07 left in the game. The energy of the stadium rose again when Gus Solis broke through the defense and made his way down the sideline until he was brought down near the Lobos’ 20. Despite losing some yards because of a penalty away from the ball, the Braves rallied to the end zone to score again with 2:10 left in the game.
The Braves’ 49-7 victory leaves them undefeated as they go into their final game of the season against the Duarte Falcons. Thanks to their undefeated league record and their victory against Azusa earlier in the season, the Braves have earned the title of Montview League Champions.
