COVINA CA– On November 3rd, Braves Varsity Football faced off against the Northview Vikings at the Covina District Field, ending with a score of 42-14. Coming in with hopes of a playoff spot, the Braves faced a very challenging opponent.

When asked about the game Brandon Romero said: “We came out fighting, they came out fighting and in the end, they were the better team and we weren’t.”

Starting off the first quarter, the Braves Christopher Vargas received the kickoff. After a short push up the field, the Braves were forced to punt the ball. Juan Cortez faked the punt and ran for a first down near the 50-yard line.

Unfortunately, on the next drive, Jacob Robles fumbled the ball, and the Vikings recovered. Four minutes into the first quarter, the Vikings Antwaunfb-1 Ayers scored the first touchdown of the night, bringing the score to 7-0.

The Braves offense had not given up hope and upon regaining possession ,drove the ball downfield. Sadly, another fumble led to the Vikings scoring another touchdown, leaving our Braves scoreless, 14-0, at the end of the 1st quarter.

The Braves came out strong in the second quarter, driving the ball down the field towards the goal line. Robles put the Braves on the scoreboard for 7 points after making a 30-yard touchdown pass to Christopher Vargas.

Unluckily, the Braves defense couldn’t hold the Vikings offense, and Kevin Thomas scored an 18-yard touchdown run for the Vikings.

Regaining possession of the ball the Braves drove downfield yet again, with Jacob Robles completing a pass to Luis Flores, who was tackled by Antwaun Ayers, stopping the Braves drive.  With 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, the Braves took their first time out.

The Vikings offense sputtered on the next possession and before heading to halftime, the Braves took another time out. The Braves were down entering halftime, with the score at 21-7.fb-3

Entering the second half, the Braves were strong. The game was yet to end and the Braves still had a fighting chance. However, the Vikings came out just as strong and, with presumably new strategies during halftime, left the Braves scoreless in the 3rd quarter. Steven Comstock gained another touchdown for the Vikings, leaving the Braves 28-7 at the end of the third quarter.

Kicking off the last quarter of the game, the Braves got extremely close to the goal line. Their first attempt to get in was called back due to a pass interference against the Vikings. Luis Flores, senior captain and running back, ran it on the next play, making the score 28-14. The Vikings continued to run the score up and, at the end of the game, the Braves were defeated, with a score of 42-14. This would end their much anticipated season and playoff chances.

Post-game in the locker room Gio Velazquez, a senior said “… We weren’t the better team, we didn’t prepare so… They won sadly it was our last game…”
