FLEMINGSBURG, KENTUCKY– Days after the death of her husband Dalton Prager, Katie Prager  died on September 22 in hospice care after complications with cystic fibrosis and a lung transplant.thctl847wl

The relationship between Dalton and Katie Prager had been compared, by many, to the couple in The Fault in Our Stars. However, instead of both suffering from cancer, both Dalton and Katie suffered from cystic fibrosis.

Katie and Dalton started their relationship when they were only 19. The two first communicated with each other on Facebook in 2009, after Katie messaged Dalton, encouraging him to stay strong during his fight.

Both of their doctors highly advised against them meeting in person because Dalton had an infection called burkholderia cepacia, which could have fatal effects on her, because she too had cystic fibrosis. Despite the professional advice, the two decided to finally meet in person. Unfortunately, Katie immediately contracted the infection.

The couple wed one another two years later and were happily married, alive, and well. “Those years were great,” Katie said days before she died. “We did stuff; we had fun. It was like something out of a fairy tale.”

In 2014, the infections became more aggressive and both had to receive lung transplants.

Unfortunately, Dalton later experienced even more health complications, developing lymphoma. He managed to survive the treatment, but still had pneumonia and a viral infection. He was hospitalized in Missouri.

Katie had to be entered into hospice care in Kentucky, after her conditions also worsened. The couple wanted to be reunited, because they knew they didn’t have much time left together. However, Dalton was in too critical of a condition to be transported, and died in a hospital in St. Louis. Katie peacefully died soon after, due to infections that took over her body.

“It gave me some of the best years of my life,” Katie stated after Dalton’s death. “I’d rather have five years of being in love and just really completely happy than 20 years of not having anybody.”
