Braves Smoke the Warriors

BALDWIN PARK, CA — On Friday September 9, Baldwin Park High School’s Varsity Football team seized a win against the Saddleback Christian Valley Warriors with a score of 52 – 21.

Within 15 seconds of the first quarter, running back Luis Flores completed a rushing touchdown to set the mood for the rest of game. The Braves continued their momentum when David Covarrubias also made a touchdown four minutes later, furthering the lead, 14-0. The Warriors put themselves on the scoreboard when they made a touchdown minutes later. Their attempts were unsuccessful when Flores scored his second touchdown, bringing the score to 21-7 until the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter, Flores completed another rushing touchdown and increased the Braves’ lead even further, 28-7. Later the Warriors completed another touchdown with six minutes on the clock, bringing the score to 28-13. The Braves steadily fought for yards afterwards and found themselves stuck at the Warriors’ ninth yard line for a while. However, with 10 seconds left for this quarter, the Braves’ Jonathan Frias pulled in a pass and made a  touchdown, ending the quarter with a score of 35-13.

The third quarter started badly when the Braves committed a kickoff foul and the Warriors made a touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion minutes later, bringing the score to 35-21. However, this touchdown was the only one of the quarter as both teams struggled to gain yardage on each other.

The final quarter started with a field goal by Juan Cortez. Flores completed another long run that took the Braves down to the one yard line, which allowed Flores to finish the drive, bringing the score to 45-21. David Covarrubias also completed a touchdown, the final one of the game. The fourth quarter ended with a score of 52-21 and a victory for the Braves.

“It [this win] gives us the momentum to move forward,” explained defensive back Jesus Aguilar. “With this momentum we will be able to execute our game plan for next week, and hopefully come out with a win.”
