A Natural Disaster In The Making

On the weekend of April 16, two major earthquakes struck Japan (M7 magnitude) and Ecuador (M7.8 magnitude) , leading some to speculate that these two events were related. Erik Klementti of WIRED stated, “There is no geologic evidence that big earthquakes that are far away (1,000-10,000s kilometers) are directly triggering each other. Sure, they are both part of the grand system of plate tectonics, but one earthquakes does not lead to the other.” Although it may seem logical to assume that two events of such proportions were in some way related, this is simply not possible from a geological standpoint.yellowstone 2

While the earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador have certainly received their fair amount of media coverage, and rightfully so, there may be something else brewing in the northern regions of the United States that could possibly be as “newsworthy” soon, or not soon.

Yellowstone National Park is one of earth’s “super volcanoes”, sizing 55 miles across, 30 miles wide, and 9 miles deep. “An explosion from this volcano would be at least 2,000 times more powerful than the eruption of Mount St. Helens and would release a cloud of gas and ash that would circle the earth, block out the sun and cause devastating climate changes to the planet,” stated WebProNews in their article “Yellowstone Volcano Could Be Gigantic.

yellowstone 3Now, considering that the only eruptions of this “Super Volcano” were: 2.1 million, 1.2 million, and 640,000 years ago, scientist had once thought there wouldn’t be another explosion for some time.

The tune may have begun to change.

Starting in 2004, scientist have been observing the ground above the super volcano as it continued to rise at rates of nearly 2.8 inches per year. Now, Robert Smith, a geophysicist at Utah University stated, “We have seen uplift of 6 to 8 cm (in some areas) every year. Those are high levels.”

While earthquakes may certainly be disasters of considerable proportion, the explosion of the super volcano known as Yellowstone may prove to be the grandest disaster known to the recorded history of mankind.
