3.14159...Pie, Einstein, and More

March 14, better known as Pi Day, marks the celebration of the ancient irrational number used throughout many levels of mathematics. In addition, it is the date of Albert Einstein’s birth.

“March 14 (3/14) is celebrated annually as Pi Day because the date resembles the ratio of a circle’s circumference to it’s diameter,” explains Olivia B. Waxman of TIME.

3.14.16 is being hailed as “Rounded Pi Day” by the “core club of Pi Day fans” that Luke Anderson, founder and proprietor of TeachPi.org, mentions in an article in his site.

Many, like senior Carlos Espinoza, are taking the day to chow down on some pies.

“I’m just gonna hang out with my friends you know, and when we hang out we usually get pretty hungry later so today is a good day for pie,” remarked Espinoza.

Others, like this author, spend most of Pi Day worrying about whether or not they got admitted to MIT, as the school is notorious for releasing decisions on this day. The decisions will go online on 3/14/16 at 6:28 PM EST. 6:28 is two times pi and is also known as tau.

“I really hope I get in,” as I logged on the portal wishing that the decisions had been leaked earlier than intended. They were not.

Albert Einstein, famed physicist and original “mc”, was born on March 14, 1879. His laundry list of achievements helped him leave behind a legacy that extends to this day. Most recently, his claim of the existence of gravitational waves was proven to be true. Gravitational waves compress and stretch the very fabric of spacetime itself.albert-einstein

Princeton hosted a “Surprise Birthday Party for Albert Einstein” earlier today as part of their annual Pi Day celebrations.

To celebrate Pi Day, Microsoft is offering a 31.4% discount on Dell PCs, including the flagship model, the XPS 13. Originally priced at $999, the 13.3-inch non-touchscreen laptop is on sale starting at $635.81. The laptop comes with an Intel i5 processor, 128 GB SSD, and up to 11 hours of battery life.
