iDemand My Privacy

Following the terrorist attack in San Bernardino on December 2nd, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has since demanded several times that Apple help in the investigation by creating a “backdoor” in the encrypted operating system of an Iphone device which belonged to the primary suspect who is now deceased. While it may seem trivial for Apple to resist assisting a federal investigation, the issue has become one of consumer privacy, and Apple does not take it very lightly.

“Compromising the security of our personal information can ultimately put our personal safety at risk. That is why encryption has become so important to all of us,” stated Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc., when he expressed his concern in a publicly released letter.applevsgiv

Privacy has become an increasingly sensitive issue throughout the nation; however, given the circumstances, it is inevitable to think, Is Apple doing the right thing by refusing to assist the government?

“I don’t think requiring backdoors into encryption is either going to be an effective way to increase security or is really the right thing to do for the direction the world is going in. So, yeah, we’re pretty sympathetic with Tim and Apple on this one,” stated Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, according to Wired.

While some iconic figures in the world of technology have come out as sympathetic towards Cook’s approach, other highly influential figures have also come out and spoken against Apple’s approach to the issue. It is beginning to seem as if this specific issue will become one of the biggest standoffs, if not the biggest, between the Federal Government and technology companies.

“This is a specific case where the government is asking for access to information,” stated Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, and later added, “They are not asking for some general thing; they are asking for a particular case.” He also claimed, “It is no different than [the question of] should anybody ever have been able to tell the phone company to get information, should anybody be able to get bank records.”
