Seniors Dominate in Last Home Game

BALDWIN PARK, CA —  On Friday, February 12th, the Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated the Duarte Falcons, 73-55, in their last home game of the regular season. They took second place in the Montview League and will face off against Buena Park on Wednesday, February 17th in a playoff game at the Coyote’s home territory.

Before the game, the seniors on the basketball team were recognized for their hard work and were given special introductions. In addition, the senior cheerleaders were recognized during halftime in a similar fashion.

“It was kind of emotional, but it was good to play with my friends since freshman year,” commented Isaiah Delgado on his last home game of the regular season.

Coach Israel Anguiano played a seniors-only starting lineup that struggled a bit early on, but found their rhythm throughout the game.

The first quarter began with several missed shots by the Braves and several offensive fouls by the Falcons. Isaiah Delgado, who has mostly shot three-pointers this season, demonstrated his versatility as a player when he came up with a Duarte turnover and scored on a contested layup.

Fernando Carrillo sank a three-pointer on the Braves’ first possession of the second quarter. However, foul calls on the Braves sent the Falcons to the line where they were able to sink three of four in the first few possessions. Junior Castaneda responded with a three-pointer to bring the score to 21-11, in favor of the Braves.

Offensive rebounIMG_2573ding gave the Braves second and third chances to score on several possessions; the Braves continued this trend for much of the game. A last second jump shot by Chris Giron gave the Braves a 31-18 lead going into halftime.

Delgado opened the second half with a successful three-point attempt that resembled Fernando’s in the beginning of the second quarter. Defensive intensity led to offensive opportunities as Timothy Lam and Manuel Reyes scored on back-to-back fastbreaks.

“It felt like [I was] playing my last home game during freshman year because the team was ready to play and we all had fun. The crowds were supportive and kept on cheering us on,” remarked Timothy Lam after the game.

David Brizuela ended the third quarter with a buzzer beater, just as Giron had ended the first half.IMG_2647

Manuel Reyes scored on a lob by William Trinidad from out-of-bounds. Reyes’ athletic feat hints towards the possibility of an in-game dunk against Buena Park on Wednesday.

The Falcons managed to cut the Braves’ lead to seven points but multiple trips to the foul line by Trinidad, a three-pointer by Giron, and back-to-back three-pointers by Delgado, sealed the Falcons’ fate.
