Lady Braves Give the Lobos the Works

BALDWIN PARK, CA —- On Wednesday, February 10th, the Lady Braves Basketball team defeated the Workman Lady Lobos, 53-28, on Senior Night. The seniors on the team received an extended introduction and IMG_1067later put on a strong performance.

“I’m just glad my teammates fed me the ball. You know they trusted me and they gave me a chance,” stated Kiana Martinez after the game.

Both teams were slow to start the match, but the Braves took an early 5-0 lead after a three pointer by Eileen Sandoval. Several fouls later, the Lady Lobos tied the game, 9-9.

The Lady Braves picked up the momentum during the second quarter. A few plays later and the Braves were up by ten points due to a couple of successful three-point attempts and a fantastic block and successive layup by IMG_1078Jenny Aguilar. The Lobos struggled to create any play action and found themselves turning the ball over almost every play. A buzzer beater by Nicole Rodriguez gave the Braves a 16-point lead at the end of the half.

The Lady Braves controlled the tempo of the game and continued to drain three-point buckets and capitalized on second chance opportunities. The Lady Lobos, although down by almost 20 points, demonstrated great ball movement which would have given the Braves a much more difficult time if it had been present throughout the game.

Unfortunately for Workman, there was no stopping the offensive prowess of the seniors who were looking to go out with a bang. Martinez’ hustle helped the Braves maintain possession of the ball after a missed shot and even allowed her to rack up offensive rebounds and points.

After four quarters of play, the Lady Braves emerged victorious with a 25-point margin, defeating Workman 53-28.

“I’m going to miss it, I played since like second grade so I’m going to miss this sport. But I’m glad I played with fun people this year,” replied Nora Torres when asked about her last home game of the regular season.
