Braves Run Out of Time

On Wednesday, February 3rd, the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team suffered a disheartening loss against their hosts, the Azusa Aztecs, with an agonizingly close final score of 31-29.

“Sometimes the ball doesn’t always bounce your way, but I’m proud of the girls, they gave a good effort, and…we didn’t lose the game, we just ran out of time,” stated Coach George Luna, comforting his team.

The Braves dominated the first quarter of play as their defense prevented the Aztecs from maintaining control of the ball, which in turn allowed the Braves to take the lead. The Lady Braves’ offense was led by team captain Lauren Pistaffa who scored the initial six points of the quarter. Sally Hernandez’ efforts brought the score to 8-2 at the end of the first quarter.

GVBB2-4(2)The start of the second quarter signaled a noticeable shift in power on the court as the Aztecs approached the Braves with newfound ferocity. The Aztecs were able to cut through the Braves’ defense and make an 11-point jump to the lead. The first half of the game ended with a score of 13-12 with the Aztecs in the lead and the Braves nipping at their heels.

“We made a lot of mistakes. We didn’t rebound well, and when we did, we missed our layups and that really hurt us,” commented Coach Luna.

The second half began and the Lady Braves were determined to not repeat their previous mistakes. The Aztecs’ every move was matched by the Braves, with neither side ever taking a lead of more than four points. In the end, however, it was the Aztecs who emerged victorious with a score of 31-29.

“We’re still teammates and we’re family so we lose together, win together and we’ve got three more games left,” said team Captain Lauren Pistaffa to her fellow Lady Braves.
