Girls Basketball Suffers Heartbreak

On Wednesday, January 20th, the Girls Varsity Basketball team played their third home league game and fell to Gladstone, 48-47. Sally Hernandez led the team with 15 points, while Lauren Pistaffa had ten.

The game started off slowly, with both teams going scoreless until Baldwin Park’s Nora Torres scored after over four minutes of playing time. Soon after, Hernandez was able to get herself open in the corner and sunk a three. At the end of the first, only Hernandez and Torres had scored, coming up with a score of 11-9, with the Braves in the lead.

However, in the second and third quarters the Braves fell into a slump. They were able to get open and put up uncontested shots, but they simply could not connect. This, combined with Gladstone’s on-target shooting, including some threes, led to an intense game. At the half, the Braves were still in the lead 22-17.

Again, the third quarter started off slow, with Gladstone finally scoring midway through the quarter. Baldwin Park was able to come up with a seven point lead, which was quickly diminished after several Gladstone steals. At the end of the third, Baldwin Park was holding onto a two point lead, 31-29.

The fourth quarter was filled with intense action since the score was so close; every shot mattered at that point. After much back and forth scoring and a spectacular three by Hernandez, the Braves were up, 47-46. After rebounding the ball, the Lady Braves turned it over on a bad pass. Soon after this, Gladstone scored with only seconds left, giving them the lead and the win, with a score of 48-47.

Just share it.
