Cross Country Team Makes History
December 9, 2015
On Saturday, November 28th the Boys Braves Cross Country team made school history by becoming the first team to make it to state, and brought home the second place trophy from Fresno, California.
The team worked hard all year, from the last day of school in May until November 27th. The boys’ team trained every day through, rain, sun, and unrelenting hundred degree weather. The journey to state began when assistant Coach Brandon Ortiz held a meeting with the team to discuss the future goals for the season. There and then the boys knew their number one priority was to make it past CIF preliminaries and on to Finals. If so they would be the first cross country team since the 1970’s to make it to finals, but the boys weren’t satisfied with that goal and set their eyes on a higher achievement.
They knew they had a chance to make it past Finals with their current team, given the fact that they only lost one varsity member from last year. The dream of going to state finally became a reality on November 21st when they qualified with a third place finish at CIF Finals. They came close the previous year, but tied with the last place entry and lost by one point.
This year they were ready and determined for the whole team to make it to state. Senior Salvador Capetillo finished his race in sixth place, and led the braves to a second place team finish. The Braves lost the first place title against undefeated Brea Olinda.
When asked about how he felt about his season Junior Jose Melchor commented, “I was pretty happy and content, I achieved and I’m happy for my team. We were really close to state and we just came short by one point and I’m just hoping that next year we’ll come back stronger than ever and hopefully take that title.”
In the beginning of the 2015 cross country season, Baldwin Park High School did not rank in the top 100 chart for cross country teams in the state of California, but that did not stop the Braves from progressing all throughout the season and eventually getting the recognition they deserved.
From being clear and obvious underdogs, Baldwin Park’s Cross Country team finished their season at Fresno, with a second place finish at the CIF State Meet on November 28, 2015.
History has been made. Congratulations Braves.
