BALDWIN PARK, CA- On Friday, April 7, Baldwin Park High School held their Powderpuff football game. The intense game was close and low scoring, as the Juniors won, 12-6.

Junior Monique Anguiano stated, “It was challenging because all of the girls were competitive and each team wanted to win. The adrenaline you get out there while you’re playing with the girls you got to know is the feeling like no other.”

The first quarter went by fast, as the Juniors attacked early by running the ball. Maryah Quiroz took the first handoff of the game to the house; however, they were not able to score the extra point, (6-0) The Seniors started off slowly as it seemed they could not find their groove. At the end of the first quarter the seniors were gaining some yards through running the ball.

Entering the second quarter the Seniors continued their momentum as they drove down to the red zone. Juniors defense stood tall as they did not allow a touchdown. The Juniors followed up their impressive defense with outstanding offense with a 25 yard touchdown pass, (12-0). Going into halftime both teams seem to cool down and focused more on their defense.

The third quarter began with the Seniors proving they can make a defensive stand of their own, as they forced the Juniors to turn the ball over. Seniors’ energy transferred to the offensive side of the ball, as they made multiple runs to get into the red zone again. After a huge run from Leanne Do the clock ran out for the third quarter, still 12-0 Juniors.

During a quick timeout the seniors created a play for quarterback Lupe Gomez to score on a rushing attempt. The Seniors were not able to get the conversion, (12-6).

During the fourth quarter the Seniors defense stepped up and did not allow the Juniors to come close to scoring again. On the offensive side the Seniors kept making critical errors that set them up with bad field position. With time running out and Juniors with possession of the ball it seemed the game was over, but the Juniors decided to pass the ball on the final play and Daniela Arellano, from the Seniors, got an interception and almost sent the game into overtime with an ending score of 12-6.

Senior coach Richard Perez had great words for the Powderpuff game. “The game was amazing, the turn out was great. The girls were hyped up and the crowd was getting into it.”
