St Patrick’s Day lands on Friday, March 17 and is the observance of the death of Saint Patrick, who was the patron Saint of Ireland. It originally started as a Catholic feast day but has now became a day of celebration celebrating the Irish culture. The best way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day is to wear green.
If you’re in the mood for a scary film, the Great Horror Movie Nights at the old zoo in Griffith Park will be showing the movie Leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day. They will also be having games, prizes and scare-actors before the show.
It might be hard to celebrate a holiday that revolves around drinking if you’re underage. One way to celebrate is to throw a party. This year, St. Patty’s Day lands on a Friday, which is perfect.
You can decorate everything green and with leprechauns. You can even play Irish music and eat green food like green cake, green eggs and ham, spinach dip, or green jello to be festive. If you decide to eat traditional Irish food you can eat Irish stew, shepherd’s pie, bacon and cabbage, boxty, coddle, and colcannon. Another idea is to host a movie night with your friends or family. Some traditional Irish movies you can watch on this day are: Waking Ned Devine, Once, The Crying Game, The Snapper, Intermission, In the Name of the Father.
“I don’t really know much about St. Patrick’s Day but I guess my favorite about it is that everyone wears green,” says Juan Ruvalcaba.
“It’s just an ordinary day that is your choice to celebrate or not,” says Priscilla Hernandez.
Some places who offer a green treat on St. Patrick’s Day include: Krispy Kreme, McDonald’s, Dunkin Donuts, Baskin-Robins, Burger King, and Jersey Mike’s. Krispy Kreme dyes their original glazed donut green for this holiday. McDonald’s offers green shakes which come in four flavors: the Chocolate Shamrock Shake, the Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappé, the Shamrock Mocha and the Shamrock Hot Chocolate. Dunkin’ Donuts has a special shamrock sprinkle donut and a yeast ring donut with chocolate frosting and green shamrock sprinkles. Baskin Robins offers a limited green ice cream cake, decorated with four leaf clovers, a rainbow and a pot of gold. At Burger King, the Oreo Irish Mint Shake is the St. Patrick’s Day version of the Classic Oreo Cookie Shake.
