BALDWIN PARK, CA– Just on the borders of the city, Orchid Thai is located in the Gateway Center, just at the corner of Francisquito Ave. and Puente Ave. The restaurant is surrounded by Starbucks, Dollar Tree, and Divine Nail.
Orchid Thai opened in early 2015, offering both a dining and takeout menu. Not only is it well known for its modern interpretation of the traditional Thai dishes, but customers also seem to like Orchid Thai for both its calling-in and ordering online system.
At 1634 Puente Ave, Baldwin Park, CA 91706, Orchid Thai is open from 11:00 AM–10:00 PM. Right upon entering, decorations and paintings can be seen hanging on the violet walls of the place. The waitresses greet you immediately and offer water or any type of drink. They were most certainly patient in allowing customers to take their time ordering.
The menu ranged from large appetizers to cute snacks to boba drinks. Entrees were only around $9.00, including broccoli with crispy pork, BBQ pork, and cashew nuts. Appetizers were only $6.00 to $8.00, offering satay chicken, golden shrimp, Eastern Thai style sausages, fried gyoza, popcorn chicken, and cream cheese rangoon. Seafood salad, squid salad, grilled beef salad, and papaya salad were only some of the types of salads offered, at $8.00 to $12.00. Various styles of $8.00 noodles were listed on the menu, starting with orchid pad see ewe and ending with glass stir fried noodles. The $8.00 to $10.00 curry menu had seven different styles, each with its own level of spice.
The list goes on. Soups varied with the type of meat, around $11.00. A mini menu of just vegetables were on the side, with different combinations of contents, around $8.00 each. Because Thailand has such a wide range of cultures from different ethnic groups, the menu extended almost two pages just for fried rice, only $8.00 to $10.00. For fish lovers, different kinds of fish were listed, ranging from $7.00 to $16.00. How can anyone forget the drinks and desserts? From $1.00 to $2.50, exotic teas and boba drinks were listed, and $0.50 for additional toppings. Mango and sticky rice, and fried banana with ice cream are both a must when visiting a Thai restaurant, around $8.00.
There was also a lunch special, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on weekdays to invite and lure in more customers. All the prices were under $9.00 here. Orchid Thai is considered to be a very affordable place. Options of additional content or expensive food such as fish are reasonable, depending on the quality and your preferences.
The food was ready in a short amount of time, about seven minutes after being ordered: Panang, an authentic spicy chili paste served with peanut sauce and coconut milk, and the Orchid house special, meat covered in sweet and sour sauce, because they both are go-to’s, especially around lunch time.
I tried Orchid Thai’s food on Veteran’s Day and I ended up satisfied with this food joint, which has been given various good reviews and comments. Because the restaurant isn’t entirely authentic, it is not a surprise to say that I prefer my mother’s dishes. The rice was a little overcooked, and too soft for me. Also, I didn’t like the feel– quiet and empty. I prefer eating in a busy and populated environment. Customers usually don’t sit down to eat but rather order to-go with their friends and families. However, the taste and flavors of the curry and meat most definitely remind me of my childhood and the service was great.
Overall, I give Orchid Thai a 4/5. Perhaps this food joint should advertise a bit more so that the restaurant can expand and attract a bigger audience. It is notable that its neighbor restaurants dominate Orchid Thai. But, of course, its traditional Thai cuisine, excellent service and friendly staff can make anyone love the place.
