LA PUENTE, CA — On Thursday and Friday, April 27-28, Braves Varsity Badminton competed in the annual Montview League Prelims and Finals at La Puente High School.

“I feel very nervous,” admitted Michelle Del Toro, “but I think our team members will pull through.”

On the first day of prelims, the anxiety was palpable in the stands, especially among all of the badminton players who would be competing in the opening mixed doubles matches. Braves Mixed Doubles 1 (Kevin Chua and Del Toro) and Mixed Doubles 2 (Jialou Chen and Tiffany Yu) easily made it through the first rounds and made it to the quarterfinals at the end of the first day. Mixed Doubles 3 (Alan Le and Shwe Nemyo), on the other hand, had trouble against Azusa’s team and were knocked out in the sudden death matches.

In both girls’ doubles and boys’ doubles, the Braves easily won their preliminary matches to proceed to the final matches the next day. These individuals included Boys’ Doubles 1 (Chua and Chen), Boys’ Doubles 2 (Le and Christopher Lazo), Girls’ Doubles 1 (Yu and Sharon Tran), and Girls’ Doubles 2 (Cindy Nguyen and Del Toro).

In girls’ singles, while Girls’ Singles 1 (Tuyen Ho) also breezed past her competition into the finals, Girls’ Singles 2 (Sophia Nguyen) unfortunately lost against Gladstone in her second match and was unable to move forward in the brackets.

Both Boys’ Singles 1 (Gabriel Musni) and Boys’ Singles 2 (Bai Rong Lin) struggled against much more experienced players and also found themselves without a bracket after the initial rounds.

After the preliminary matches on the 27th, the Braves who remained standing returned on the 28th to contend for spots on the podium. All of the Braves who made it to the second day were successful and earned a medal. As the result of intense matches, Baldwin Park swept the podiums with a total of 13 medals.

In mixed doubles, Braves Mixed Doubles 1 (Kevin Chua and Del Toro) won third place while Braves Mixed Doubles 2 (Jialou Chen and Tiffany Yu) won fourth place.

In girls’ doubles, Girls’ Doubles 1 (Yu and Sharon Tran) won first place in the league followed closely by Girls’ Doubles 2 (Cindy Nguyen and Del Toro).

In boys’ doubles, Boys’ Doubles 1 (Chua and Chen) won another first place title for the Braves while Boys’ Doubles 2 (Le and Lazo) won third place.

“I’m proud of our team’s performance, especially since a lot of players were nervous on the first day,” explained Chen. “This was a good end to our season.”

The next step for these Braves are the individual CIFs, where they will take on the rest of the best in Southern California.
